The short answer
Don’t take it: let your child give it away. A dummy that is taken is a loss they protest until it comes back. A dummy they hand to the dummy fairy themselves, in exchange for a letter and a star they can see, is something they did - and that is what cuts the tears down. No method removes every tear, but this one makes the hard part short: usually three to five nights.
Why taking it away causes the tears
To a toddler, a dummy that vanishes overnight is simply gone, and the only thing they can do about it is cry until it comes back. If it has ever come back after crying, they know that works. The tears are not naughtiness; they are the one move available to them.
The gentle way, in five steps
- Tell the story first. For a few evenings, talk about Ditch, the dodo fairy, who turns dummies into stars. Always “when” they give theirs, never “if”. A Fairy Tale is a three-picture version to read together.
- Let them decorate a box. A shoebox or a tea box and some stickers. A child who made the box has usually already decided.
- Hunt down every one, together. Car, changing bag, behind the radiator. Count them into the box out loud.
- They leave it out themselves. In the garden, on the doorstep or at the end of the bed. Once they are asleep, it leaves the house for good and a letter takes its place.
- Find their star. The next evening, look out together and pick the star that is theirs. On cloudy nights, find it in the night sky on this site instead.
The one rule: once it has gone, it does not come back - not at 2am, not in the car, not “just this once”. A dummy that returns after crying teaches that crying works, and the next attempt is harder.
What the first nights look like
- Night one often goes better than you fear. It runs on excitement.
- Nights two and three are the hard ones. That is the normal shape, not a sign it is failing.
- By a week to ten days, most children are sleeping as they did before.
What to say when they ask for it back is on the do’s and don’ts. The full night-by-night plan is A Dummy’s Guide.
A letter from the dummy fairy
The letter in the morning is the part children go back to. Ditch’s wording is on the dummy fairy letter template page to copy out tonight, or the pack prints it with your child’s name in, along with a star certificate and their own named star.
